Dynamics CRM BI Tools

Recently as of the time of this writing, Microsoft took yet another step in the direction of making it easier for business partners and clients to add customization to its BI suite of software. (BI stands for “business intelligence”.)

Microsoft has released its Dynamics CRM Analytics Foundation. This is a bundle of customizable documentation and source code, and it's for free to all users of MS CRM software. Clients and business partners can build on the tools found in this bundle for the creation of customized BI applications, or simply use them as they are found.

Microsoft is just one of the sellers of CRM software that is now endorsing what it calls “BI for the masses”, which essentially comprises the implementation of real-time metrics, information, and data in a format that is usable by all staff members and not confined to upper management. Microsoft is hoping that by selling the software that enables this, it can increase its own sales volume of CRM software.

Microsoft's Dynamics CRM software draws upon Microsoft's data analysis and management software programs including its SharePoint Portal technologies, Visual Studio suite of developmental tools, Office Business Scorecard Manager, and its SQL Server relational database. Christian Pederson, the senior director for Microsoft's Dynamics CRM development, says, “We're bringing the entire BI strategy from Microsoft to life”. He expects Dynamics CRM to be an important proof in the pudding for that concept, as it merges the analytics capabilities and data mining capabilities of the software with the company's SQL Server. Another piece of the Dynamics CRM suite that Microsoft will be releasing later on in this year at the time of this writing, according to Pederson, is going to be its PerformancePoint Server 2007.

PerfomancePoint Server 2007 has been undergoing Beta testing since November of 2006. It comprises a conglomeration of technologies that Microsoft acquired through the buying of ProClarity last year and its own proprietary BI technologies. PerfomancePoint functions as a way for users to put their data and business rules onto a central server to then be integrated with BI forecasting, planning, scorecarding, and analysing.

The latest step in Dynamics CRM can allow a company to study predictive analytics concerning client activities in order to cross-sell or upsell with more success. When a client contacts your company, your salesmen would be able to access the data in Dynamics CRM related to things beyond just that client, such as other clients' buying habits, that put the salesman in a position to make informed and relevant recommendations for additional products.

Inventory is usually the largest current asset of a business that sells products. If the inventory account is greater at the end of the period than at the start of the reporting period, the amount the business actually paid in cash for that inventory is more than what the business recorded as its cost of good sold expense. When that occurs, the accountant deducts the inventory increase from net income for determining cash flow from profit.

the prepaid expenses asset account works in much the same way as the change in inventory and accounts receivable accounts. However, changes in prepaid expenses are usually much smaller than changes in those other two asset accounts.

The beginning balance of prepaid expenses is charged to expense in the current year, but the cash was actually paid out last year. this period, the business pays cash for next period's prepaid expenses, which affects this period's cash flow, but doesn't affect net income until the next period. Simple, right?

As a business grows, it needs to increase its prepaid expenses for such things as fire insurance premiums, which have to be paid in advance of the insurance coverage, and its stocks of office supplies. Increases in accounts receivable, inventory and prepaid expenses are the cash flow price a business has to pay for growth. Rarely do you find a business that can increase its sales revenue without increasing these assets.

The lagging behind effect of cash flow is the price of business growth. Managers and investors need to understand that increasing sales without increasing accounts receivable isn't a realistic scenario for growth. In the real business world, you generally can't enjoy growth in revenue without incurring additional expenses.

ActiveX component to retrieve password

This is a small ActiveX component that allows you to retrieve the database password of every password-protected mdb file that created with Microsoft Access 95/97/2000/XP or with Jet Database Engine 3.0/4.0 .
You can use this component in all development tools that supports ActiveX components, including Visual Basic, Visual C++, Microsoft Access, Delphi, and other development tools.

Limitations:

• Passwords of Access 2000/XP files cannot be recovered if their length is longer than 18 characters.
• This ActiveX DLL can only reveal the main database password. It cannot recover the user-level passwords.
  

In order to start using this ActiveX DLL, you have to register it on your machine. You can use the regsvr32 utility for registering the Access PassView ActiveX component. In order to do it, type the following command: regsvr32 accesspv.dll

HeapMemView is a small utility that allows you to view the content of all memory blocks allocated in the heap of the process the you select.
This free tool can be useful for developers that need to trace memory leaks in their software and work on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista (Earlier versions of Windows are not supported), there is also x64 version (for Vista x64) available as a separated download.

HeapMemView doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLs. Just copy the executable file (HeapMemView.exe) to any folder you like, and run it.
After you start HeapMemView, you have to select the process that you want to inspect.

The main window of HeapMemView has 2 panes:

• The upper pane displays the list of memory blocks allocated in the heap of the process the your selected.
• The lower pane displays the contant of the memory block that you select in the upper pane.
  

Tips For Using HeapMemView:

• In order to decrease the number displayed memory blocks and to improve the performances, HeapMemView filter all memory blocks with size smaller than 80 bytes. You can change this default filter by using the Memory Blocks Filter window (F8).
• Be aware that without the 80 bytes filter, you may get a lots of small and meaningless memory blocks, and the loading process will be pretty slow.
• Each time that you press F5, the newly added memory blocks are marked with '*', as well as they are painted with pink color. You can clear the 'new' flag by using the 'Clear New Memory Blocks Mark' option (F6).
• In addition to the memory bytes displayed in the lower pane, You can view a sample of the memory bytes in the table of the upper pane - under 'Data Preview' column. In order to enable this feature, select Options->Data Preview Mode->ASCII or Hexadecimal. By default, the first 32 bytes of the memory block will be displayed. You can modify the default settings in Advanced Options window.
• You can export all heap memory blocks to binary files for inspecting them in the future, by selecting all memory blocks in the upper pane, and then using 'Export Memory Data To File' option (Ctrl+E)
• The 'Heap Handle' value is the handle returned by HeapCreate or GetProcessHeap API functions. The 'Data Address' value is the memory address returned by HeapAlloc API.
• When a program allocates heap memory with C/C++ memory functions (malloc or new keyword), you may see some header bytes preceding the real allocated memory data.

The Visual Basic 6 SP6 runtime library, also called vb6 runtime files or vbrun dll set, are required to run programs that were written in Visual Basic 6. It can be difficult to know whether a program needs these files because often an author fails to mention it in the help files or documentation. I believe it need to hard work and spend more energy to find.

Typically the way you find out is that you run the program and an error message appears;
'A required .DLL file was not found',
'Runtime error' (caution, this error has lots of different causes) or,
'Error: the file msvbvm60.dll could not be found.'

Another catch is that there are 6 major versions of Visual Basic, each with their own runtime library set (6 sets in total). Plus to make life really difficult, Visual Basic also has service pack releases. Fortunately, these are backward compatible but still can be a pain. The current set is Service Pack 6 (SP6) released in late March 2004 and it will run files written with VB 6 SP1 to SP6 .
